Electrical work carries more license, code and liability weight than almost any other residential trade, and it is still routinely priced like handyman labor. The numbers below are what US electrical contractors are actually billing in 2026, plus the arithmetic that tells you where inside those ranges your shop should sit.

Apprentice-supervised work sits below the journeyman band. Panel, service, three-phase, generator and commercial work sits at or above the top of it. A simple EV charger install beside an existing panel lands near $400–$700, while one that needs a long home run or a service upgrade runs $1,500–$3,500.
Flat rate for the recurring work, time and materials for the rest
Most profitable residential shops in 2026 run a hybrid, and the split is roughly 80/20.
- Flat rate for the jobs you do over and over: outlets, switches, dimmers, fans, can lights, dedicated circuits, EV chargers, transfer switches, panel swaps. The customer approves one number before you open a wall. You get paid for being quick rather than penalized for it, and the "why did that take two hours" conversation disappears.
- Time and materials for troubleshooting, old knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring, remodels and anything behind finished surfaces. Scope you cannot see is scope you should not fix a price on.

Converting to flat rate is then mechanical. A job that honestly takes 1.5 hours on site plus 30 minutes of driving and paperwork is 2 hours × $140 = $280 of labor, plus materials at your marked-up price.
Mark up materials, and never bury them in labor
A 20–50% markup over your cost is standard, and where you land depends on the category. Devices, breakers, boxes and fittings carry the high end because the handling cost is out of proportion to the price. Wire, conduit and panels carry the low end, usually 20–30%. That markup pays for sourcing, van stock, the return trip when a breaker is the wrong bus, and the warranty you carry on the part.
Itemize materials on their own lines. A customer reading "Labor: install 200A panel, 6 hrs" and "200A panel and breakers (materials)" argues far less than one reading a single $2,600 number. Separating them also keeps sales tax clean in the many states that tax materials and not labor. Permits go on the invoice at cost, with your time to pull the permit and meet the inspector billed as labor.
Regional variation is real, so adjust deliberately
The same 200A panel swap is a $1,800 job in rural Georgia and a $5,500 job in Denver or the New York metro. Coastal metros and high cost-of-living cities generally support rates 25–40% above rural Midwest and Southern markets, and local code and inspection requirements add real hours in some jurisdictions. Two rules hold everywhere:
- Price against your local market, but never below your own break-even number. If the local market cannot support your break-even, the problem is your overhead or your billable-hour count, not your rate.
- Charge a separate trip or mileage line outside your normal radius instead of quietly inflating the job price. Customers accept a travel charge. They do not accept feeling worked over.
When to charge a premium
- After hours, weekends, holidays: 1.5× to 2× your standard labor rate. Say the number out loud on the phone before you drive out.
- No-power and burning-smell calls: if you are dropping scheduled work to get there, that is a premium, not a favor.
- Troubleshooting: tracing an intermittent fault, thermal scanning and load testing are billable services. Free estimating covers the price of a job, not the diagnosis of one.
