What to Charge for Landscaping Jobs in 2026

Cost guides tell homeowners what to pay. This page tells you what to bill, and how route math changes the answer.

Landscaping pricing is route economics wearing work gloves. The same $60 mow is profitable on a street where you cut five lawns and a money-loser as a one-off across town. So the benchmarks below come with a warning: the range is real, but your position inside it is set by density, crew size, and season, not by courage.

These are the numbers US landscaping businesses are billing in 2026.

2026 landscaping rate benchmarks

Use these as sanity checks, not as your price list. Your own cost structure sets your rate; the market decides whether it's defensible.

What you're billingTypical 2026 US range
Lawn mowing (per visit, residential)$40–$80
Hedge and shrub trimming$60–$150
Mulch installed (per yard)$50–$100
Tree pruning (per tree)$100–$300
Spring or fall cleanup$150–$300
Crew labor (per person-hour)$45–$75
Materials markup (plants, mulch, soil)25–50% over cost

Design-build work (patios, irrigation, planting plans) prices project-based at far higher margins than maintenance; it is a different business sharing your trailer. Price it separately and never quote it per hour on the doorstep.

Per-visit, monthly, or seasonal contract

  • Per visit is where every account starts. $40–$80 covers mow, edge, trim, blow on a typical suburban lot. Below $40, the stop only makes sense as part of a dense route.
  • Monthly contracts (visits bundled at a flat rate) smooth your revenue and the customer's budget. Price them at your per-visit rate times realistic visits, minus at most 5%; anything steeper is buying loyalty you already had.
  • Seasonal agreements that bundle mowing, cleanups, and mulch lock the calendar and front-load cash. Collect the first month at signing.

Bid by the property, not the hour

Customers cannot verify hours; they can verify results. Internally, build every quote from person-hours at $45–$75 each (a 3-person crew at $60 costs the customer $180 per crew-hour) plus materials at 25–50% over cost. Externally, quote a flat number. The gap between your internal math and market flat rates is your efficiency profit, and it is the reason a tight crew makes more at $55 per lawn than a loose one makes at $70.

The route density lever

Ten minutes of drive time between stops costs a 3-person crew about $30 of payroll before the trailer gate opens. Cluster your accounts: discount the fifth lawn on one street before you discount anything else, and price distant one-offs with the windshield time built in. When a route is full, raise the price on its weakest stop rather than adding a distant one.

Charge for what your market undervalues

  • Haul-away. Green waste disposal costs money and trailer space. $25–$75 per load, stated on the quote.
  • Growth surcharges. A lawn skipped for two weeks in May is not one mow; it is a mow and a half. Have a stated returning-service rate.
  • Small-job minimums. A $150 minimum protects cleanup and trimming visits the same way it protects a handyman's shelf hang.
  • Annual increases. 5–8% each winter, announced before the season, keeps up with fuel, insurance, and wages. Silence in July, letters in February.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I charge to mow a lawn in 2026?

Typical residential mowing runs $40–$80 per visit in 2026, covering mow, edge, trim, and blow on a standard suburban lot. Lot size, terrain, gates, and above all route density set where a given lawn sits. One-off distant lawns need the drive time priced in.

How much do landscapers charge per hour?

Crew labor prices internally at $45–$75 per person-hour in most US markets, but landscapers quote customers flat per-visit or per-job prices built from that math. A 3-person crew at $60 per person-hour costs $180 per crew-hour; efficient crews profit from the flat quote.

Should landscaping customers be on contracts?

Recurring customers should be, yes. Monthly flat billing at roughly your per-visit rate times realistic visits (minus at most 5%) smooths cash flow, cuts invoicing overhead, and locks the route. Collect the first month at signing and put the visit list on each invoice.

How much should I mark up mulch and plants?

25–50% over your cost. The markup covers sourcing, delivery coordination, spoilage on plants, and the warranty replacements you inevitably eat. Always list materials separately from labor on the invoice.
